22 Red Flags To Look For In A Partner

Red flags can be personal to you; they may just be personality traits, values or morals that don't align with what you believe in. Other people might tell you that they wouldn't be concerned about these, at that point it's ultimately it's up to you if you want to continue seeing this person.

But if you've ever been blindsided by serious red flags that've been hidden under a mask at the start of a relationship, you'll know that you do not ignore them no matter what. They could be a sign that things are about to become toxic or abusive.

Sometimes we see things that we brush off as overreacting or being hypervigilant, especially if we like the person and are seeing them through rose-tinted glasses. When that happens, red flags can quickly start to appear green.

Here are 22 glaring signs that you should immediately cut someone off:

1. Someone who compulsively lies, even about small things that don’t matter.

2. Someone who’ll do anything to make themselves look like the victim after they’ve upset you.

3. Someone who’s hot and cold and makes you feel like you’re walking on eggshells.

4. Someone who always has to one-up you - they never want you to have the spotlight.

5. Someone who calls all their exes “crazy” without taking any responsibility for their part.

6. Someone who can’t respect the answer “no” and continues to beg and manipulate you until you say yes.

7. Someone who only makes an effort with you when they want or need something.

8. Someone who admits that they struggle to maintain relationships, and instead of working on it, uses it as an excuse for lack of effort.

9. Someone who constantly changes their personality to fit in.

10. Someone who throws a tantrum when they don’t get their own way.

11. Someone who gets defensive instead of apologising when you tell them that they’ve upset you.

12. Someone who has big, and negative reactions that aren’t in proportion to the situation.

13. Someone who gets angry at you for doing something that they do to you.

14. Someone who maliciously puts you down for your looks, intelligence, or personality.

15. Someone who uses gaslighting to make you question your sanity, memory and perception of reality.

16. Someone who ignores you and refuses to speak in an argument.

17. Someone who tries to control the way you speak, dress, where you go and what you do.

18. Someone who apologises for what they’ve done, but continues to do it again and again.

19. Someone who repeatedly treats you like an option and like you don’t matter.

20. Someone who always blames other people even when they’re wrong - they can't handle taking responsibility for their actions.

21. Someone who purposely embarrasses you in front of friends and family because it’s “funny”.

22. Someone who stops you going out because they don’t want other people to look at you.

No matter how much you love them, someone who displays this behaviour isn't good for you. Protect your peace and wellbeing and walk away.
